fair-fish association welcomes the first draft of International Standards for Responsible Tilapia Aquaculture but criticizes at the same time the lack of crucial criteria for the good of the tilapia itself. The draft of standards does not at all take into account animal welfare, whereas the intended criteria on animal health are insufficient. This is all the more astonishing as the wellbeing of the animal has a direct and positive impact on the fish quality. fair-fish identifies the main critical fields (husbandry system, stocking density, one-sex-population, slaughtering, disease prevention, mortality, source of fishmeal) and points out the actions to be taken. fair-fish addresses its comments at the same time to further aquaculture dialogues on other species, all run by WWF and bringing together environmentalists, industry and science.
