EU fishery commissioner Maria Damanaki insisted for a determined position of Europe within the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) going to decide on tuna catch quota by November 27. But she has been stopped by the fishery ministers of Spain, France, Italy and Malta (and by the cowardliness of the fishery ministers of the rest of the EU member states).

Letter of protest

to the fishery ministers of Spain, France, Italy and Malta??

Dear Ministers

We are deeply disappointed - indeed enraged - by the fact that you thwarted EU commissioner Maria Damanaki’s attempt to force the EU to finally meet its legal obligation to preserve the Bluefin tuna stocks. Consequently, Mrs Damanaki insisted on a determined position of Europe within the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), when the decision on tuna catch quota is made by November 27. ??

It is mainly due to your unbelievable and shocking shortsightedness that the voice of the EU within the ICCAT conference has been made to sound ridiculous, and that the EU has caved in to the demands of one of the least principled sectors of the fishing industry. Because of your perverse attitude, it is now likely that ICCAT will decide on a quota which is much too high, thus pushing the Bluefin tuna ever closer to extinction.??

While you claim to be helping the fishermen of your own countries, the fact is that you are curtailing their future economic viability, as the depletion of one of the formerly dominant predator species destabilises the entire marine food chain. In addition, your are damaging your national tourism sectors, firstly by staining the reputation of your countries and secondly by enhancing the plague of jellyfish along your beaches, as the tuna would serve to keep the jellyfish population under control.??

Shame on you, shame on your government and shame on those EU member states who were spineless enough to let you act in such a foolhardy fashion.??

Yours, in frustration and anger,
