More and more King salmon imported into the USA stems from farms in New Zealand, IntraFish reported today. Alaskan wild catch can provide up to 250 tons per year. Imports of Canadian farmed King salmon has decreased from 5'300 tons (2005) to 2'000 tons (2007). Meanwhile imports of NZ farmed King salmon have steadily increased from 45 tons (2004) to 175 tons (2007), heading for 193 tons in 2008.

Besides the fact that wild King salmon is premium, if ever importing farmed one, than why not from next door, but as far as from New Zealand? What about food miles? How high must fuel costs still rise until economic rationality will resume again?
